Fishing & Living

Fishing & Living is Anova’s industry-leading initiative to promote sustainable fisheries through improved fishing practices, and to provide enhanced living conditions to build thriving fishing communities.

Active in tuna fisheries around the world, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Micronesia, the Cook Islands and Fiji, the Fishing & Living initiative is made possible through collaborations with international and local NGOs, local and national governments, a team of field staff on-site and working in the communities, and, of course, the fishers themselves.

Anova has partnered with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) since 2012 to assess, implement, and track Fishery Improvement Plans (FIPs), resulting in countless new MSC-certified tuna fisheries throughout the Western Central Pacific Ocean including the Cook Islands, Fiji, Indonesia, and Micronesia.

The MSC is a global, science-based nonprofit dedicated to ending overfishing worldwide and developing globally-recognized standards for seafood sustainability.

Fair Trade USA

Since 2014, Fishing & Living, Anova, Fair Trade USA, and, of course, the fishers, have worked to expand the world’s first Fair Trade Wild Capture Fisheries certification to a total of 21 fishermen associations and over 500 fishermen. Fair Trade certification ensures that all participating fishers make fair and equitable wages, have safe working conditions, improve their communities and protect the environment. Fair Trade products are currently available under Anova’s Natural Blue brand.

MDPI

Masyarakat Dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI) is an Indonesian NGO that works to improve small-scale Indonesian fisheries. Their motto is “Happy people, many fish!”. Anova Food has partnered with MDPI since 2013 on three improvement projects for the Indonesian handline yellowfin tuna fishery:

  1. A Fishery Improvement Project (FIP), aiming for certification against the Marine Stewardship (MSC) standard.
  2. A Fair Trade USA certification program
  3. Implementation of traceability standards and technology
